In a time when Johnny Depp needed an 'introducing' credit, his character of Glen Lantz is introduced as being the boyfriend of Nancy Thompson in the original Nightmare on Elm Street movie.

The last death in the movie, it looked as though Glen might have evaded a gruesome end by strategically positioning himself as final girl Nancy's boyfriend, a wise move in the 'surviving a horror movie' strategy book.

However, when Nancy gets a call from Freddy proclaiming himself to be 'her boyfriend now', audiences might have begun to guess things weren't about to go well for Glen. Despite being told categorically by Nancy to not fall asleep, Glen drops off on his waterbed, before slowly sinking into the mattress along with his headphones and television set.

A geyser of blood then erupts out of the hole made to Glen's bed, painting his room in a sickly red mess that Wes Craven actually claimed was the blood of all of Freddy's victims. The kill is an all-time classic, being one of the few instances where the Nightmare series went all-out gore and the sequence of Glen being pulled into the mattress being a genuine stomach-churner to those watching.
