Al Pacino: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Tom Dobb - Revolution

Pacino had had a few ups and downs since the turn of the eighties but even in such damp squibs as Bobby Deerfield and Author! Author!, he still turned in good work in average films. Cruising, although controversial and not the best film of anyone involved, is still an interesting piece to watch, almost as if Pacino had been cast in a downbeat version of Stallone's Cobra. It was with Revolution though that everything fell apart and Pacino 'retired' for four years before returning with the excellent Sea of Love. It tells the story of Tom Dobb who is forced to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Soon, his son is captured by the evil British soldiers including Donald Sutherland's Sergeant Major Peasy. Eventually Dobb fights for the freedom of the colonies all the while searching for his son. And that's pretty much it. It cost $28million and made...$346,761. That's more interesting than the plot. The funniest thing about this film is that Pacino stars alongside Sid Owen (Ricky!!!) and Dexter Fletcher as his son at different ages. Pacino's performance, however, is seriously misjudged and, basically, he is severely miscast as Dobb. It could have been his Gladiator or Braveheart, in actual fact it was a huge flop and became his Ishtar.
