Aladdin Trailer Breakdown: 10 Things You Need To See
3. Ham-fisted Character Beats
Adding to the unease surrounding the shakiness of the actual performances in the film is the fact that this trailer attempts to spotlight some intimate character beats and that Guy Ritchie and co. look to have handled them with all the care and sensitivity of a bull in a china shop.
In the original animated film, Aladdin's entire arc is centered around the lesson that it's not what's on the outside that makes him special, it's what's inside. Jasmine doesn't love him because he's suddenly pretending to be Prince Abubu or because he's a street rat, she loves him because of who he is inside.
So for the new trailer to feature Genie effectively summarizing that morale into one line of dialogue and then cramming it into the last few seconds of the trailer over a montage of other things makes it feel, well, more than a little unearned.
Similarly, the 'do you trust me?' line is one of the most iconic moments from the entire original film. Chucking it into the trailer and giving it all of five seconds to resonate takes a moment that should be goosebump-worthy and instead makes it actively cringe-inducing.
