Despite going through periods where he feared his dream of being a director would never happen, in 1991 he directed a Mexican movie called "Solo Con Tu Pareja", which roughly translates to "Love in a Time of Hysteria" in English, and is a moving film about two people in the midst of crisis in their lives after one is falsely diagnosed with being HIV positive, while the other finds out that her fiance is cheating on her. While the movie was generally well received, Cuaron's career stalled and he failed to direct another project until he was picked up to direct "A Little Princess" under the Warner Bros studios. The film was critically acclaimed, and received several prestigious awards. such as an Academy Award nomination. However, due to poor promotion, the movie failed to generate much revenue, failing to make money.
