Alfonso Cuaron is an enigmatic director well known for his beautiful, dark and twisted films which have his audiences going through a roller-coaster of emotions. Regardless of the age of the audience, Cuaron has a penchant for using dark tones in his films which brings out a haunted creepy aura in all his projects that have become somewhat of a calling card. Despite going through periods where he feared his dream of being a director would never happen, in 1991 he directed a Mexican movie called "Solo Con Tu Pareja", which roughly translates to "Love in a Time of Hysteria" in English, and is a moving film about two people in the midst of crisis in their lives after one is falsely diagnosed with being HIV positive, while the other finds out that her fiance is cheating on her. While the movie was generally well received, Cuaron's career stalled and he failed to direct another project until he was picked up to direct "A Little Princess" under the Warner Bros studios. The film was critically acclaimed, and received several prestigious awards. such as an Academy Award nomination. However, due to poor promotion, the movie failed to generate much revenue, failing to make money. In 2001, Cuaron went back to his roots, directing a Mexican arthouse film called "Y Tu Mama Tambien", or "And Your Mother Too" in English, the film was well received, despite controversy surrounding the graphic depiction of the sexual acts in some scenes in the film, the film smashed the box office record for a Mexican film taking 2.2 million in the first weekend, as well as receive a nomination for best original screenplay at the Academy Awards and the nomination for best Foreign Film at the Golden Globe. Y Tu Mama Tambien is regarded as one of Cuaron's best works, with it's captivating story line, it's deeply flawed characters and dark twists that the audience never sees coming. Cuaron would again find himself at the helm of major motion picture from Warner Bros studios, directing the 3rd instalment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban is widely regarded as being one of the best films in the Harry Potter series, and taking a darker more adult tone then had seen in the first two instalments directed by Chris Columbus. Two years after his success with Harry Potter, Cuaron would back it up with dystopian film "Children of Men" starring Michael Cain and Clive Owen. At the end of 2008, Cuaron took a break from movies to focus on his home life after his son was diagnosed with Autism, Cuaron became a spokesperson for Autism and tried to raise awareness. In 2010, Cuaron announced that he was returning to directing, leading a science fiction film called "Gravity" set in space. The movie, set for a 2013 release stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two Astronauts on a damaged space station.
