Alice Through The Looking Glass: 25 WTF Moments From The Trailer

21. The Mad Hatter Has/Had Shiny Green Eyes

Not only are we introduced to the Mad Hatter with brushed hair, we also see that his eyes are a very shiny green, much more so than the muted colour in the original. Continuing the theory that the brushed-hair scenes are set in the past, you can€™t help but wonder if we€™ll discover the reason why the Hatter is mad. In real life, many hatters were afflicted with mercury poisoning, leading to what became known as mad hatter disease. This was speculated by fans as the cause of the Mad Hatter€™s madness in the first film. But it€™s equally possible writer Linda Woolverton has written another reason, perhaps some kind of trauma that sparked the condition or made it worse. Looking into those sad, shiny green eyes, he looks decidedly not mad in this scene. It€™s easy to imagine this sane hatter, Tarrant Hightopp, losing the fire in his eyes because of whatever has just happened in the scene of destruction surrounding him.
