11. Moana

Though it was beset by distasteful racism controversy before it was released (a ridiculous tea cup storm based on appropriation, which now seems to be a catch-all term including historical story-telling, children's costume rule-making and food), Moana is a genuinely great delight.

It balanced old school sensibilities and familiar Disney tropes with a refreshing feminist bent, all bundled in a typically gorgeous aesthetic package and with great vocal performances. Another hit for The Rock seems like an almost redundant phrase these days.

Moana is a road movie with supernatural elements, built on the almost buddy-cop dynamic of Moana and her demi-God friend which is as witty as it is heart-warming. It might not have the immediate cultural relevance of Zootopia or the immediately sing-alongability factor of Frozen, but the songs are incredible, it is delightfully self-aware and it is a definite, big hearted crowd pleaser.
