10. Pocahontas (1995)

Here's a stark revelation for you and all you need to know about Rotten Tomatoes: Pocahontas is currently rated on the review aggregator site at a paltry 56%, and comes with a chilling Rotten score. Sometimes I despair.

It might lose points for a lack of affirmative feminist message (despite the fact that Pocahontas is far from defined by her relationship with John Smith), but Pocahontas did as much for young female fans as Frozen would 20 years later. There's a hugely important message about destiny and the approach the film takes - a thoughtful one rather than a ten cannon salute to blatancy - is comforting and welcome.

There aren't quite the same colourful side-characters - though Governor Ratcliffe is an excellent and thoroughly detestable villain - but this is all about Pocahontas' portrayal and some truly beautiful songs set in a story that isn't afraid to kill a character, to deal with dangerous politics and to not simply rely on binary narrative choices.
