Alternative Oscars 2019: The Nominees & Winners For Every Category

5. Best Actress

Hereditary Toni Collette
A24

WINNER: Toni Collette (Hereditary)

Like Best Actor, the Best Actress field tends to skew towards personality-driven awards campaigning rather than what are truly the best and worthiest performances of the year.

And though Roma's Yalitza Aparicio and The Favourite's Olivia Colman fit the bill, the other three nominees weren't quite among the five best of the year.

Glenn Close's impressive performance in The Wife was completely undermined by wonky writing and flat, TV-esque direction, while Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) were very good, but just not top five material.

Our Best Actress Alternative Oscar goes to Toni Collette for her career-best performance as a bereaved daughter in Hereditary. It is a pure acting clinic and serves as a major credit to the horror genre's ability to tease genuinely brilliant dramatic turns from talented actors.

Joining her in our revised field are the wonderful Elsie Fisher, whose gave a note-perfect performance as awkward youngster Kayla in Eighth Grade, and Thomasin McKenzie, who mesmerised with her oft-wordless portrayal of Ben Foster's daughter in Leave No Trace.

RUNNERS-UP:

2. Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade)

3. Yalitza Aparicio (Roma)*

4. Olivia Colman (The Favourite)*

5. Thomasin McKenzie (Leave No Trace)
