The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 10 Things It Did Right

6. Cutting Out Mary Jane Watson

Something of a hellstrom that was ignited when Shailene Woodley, who should have been appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane Watson, was taken out of the the movie for reasons that may or not have been the result of her "not being pretty enough" or because there were genuine concerns about packing the movie too tightly with other aspects. At the time, the removal of this character spurred an uproar of sorts, but it's clear to see in retrospect that the right decision was made in the end; there's no room for Mary Jane in this flick. Her eventual removal begins to make even more sense given the incredibly downbeat ending that comes attached to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which we won't spoil here for the sake of it (but if you know comic book mythology, you can probably guess what happens). Mary Jane Watson is a character who deserves to be introduced properly in a way that does her relationship with Peter justice... which means it was probably always a better idea to have her making her debut in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, regardless of Shailene Woodley's exit.
