The Amazing Spider-Man 2: 7 Reasons It Makes Sense To Keep Gwen Stacy Alive

7. We Already Had Two Major Character Deaths In The Last Film

The Amazing Spider-Man While The Amazing Spider-Man wasn't as dark and serious as The Dark Knight Rises was when it was released a few weeks later, it nevertheless reminded us of Spider-Man's tragic history. Being a retelling of the origin story, we of course witnessed the murder of Peter's Uncle Ben (Martin Sheen). And if killing one of Peter's surrogate father figures wasn't enough, the filmmakers killed another in the form of Captain George Stacy (Denis Leary), Gwen's father, who died from a fatal wound inflicted by the Lizard (Rhys Ifans). Having Stacy die was arguably a little excessive though the filmmakers understandably needed something emotionally dramatic on which to end the film. Also, it helped establish the issue of whether Peter should or shouldn't honour Stacy's dying wish for Peter to keep Gwen out of his life, thus protecting her from Spider-Man's enemies. If the filmmakers are going to kill off any more major characters, it's best not to do it every movie. Space these things out, lest the series become too dark.
