American Assassin Review: 2 Ups & 8 Downs

4. The Totally Forgettable Action Sequences

American Assassin Taylor Kitsch
Lionsgate

Even though there are a ton of set-pieces in this movie, they're almost all totally forgettable, blood-soaked shootouts and punch-ups, clearly trying to emulate the Jason Bourne formula of intense, close-up brawling, but ultimately lacking the visceral appeal they're aiming for.

Only the final action sequence is remotely memorable, though that's sadly not for good reason (and more on that in a moment). The film certainly isn't an ugly effort visually, but the action is thoroughly workmanlike throughout, lacking any sort of panache or inspiration whatsoever.

The action happens, the world keeps turning, and by the time the end credits roll, you'll scarcely be able to recall any especially entertaining beats whatsoever.
