American Horror Story: 10 Scariest Villains Ranked

Also known as Mr Jingles, Benjamin Richter (portrayed brilliantly by John Caroll Lynch) is the raincoat-wearing serial killer who was said to be responsible for the grisly massacre at Camp Redwood in 1970. Fastforward 14 years later, Richter escapes from the asylum he's been held at and returns to his old stomping ground to continue his bloody rampage.

His imposing size and presence make Richter the quintessential slasher villain. He's seemingly unstoppable and has a flare for killing in creatively brutal ways who wouldn't feel out of place in any '80s slasher.

However, while Richter is undoubtedly a frightening figure, what makes this character one of the best in the season is the amount of depth he's given.

As the series continues, viewers learn more about Richter's past alongside the reasons that led him to become Mr Jingles. By the end of the season, Richter is transformed from a fearsome murderer to a sympathetic and even heroic character that fans may well be cheering for.

While Richter isn't technically the main villain by the end of this season, he's nevertheless one of the most memorable, complex, and heartfelt characters to have ever appeared on the show.
