American Made Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

3. Domhnall Gleeson's Terrific Supporting Turn

Domhnall Gleeson is fast becoming one of the most impressive young actors working today, a fact he continues to cement with his supporting appearance here as a CIA spook named Monty Schafer.

Schafer shows up every so often to brief Barry on his next outing or introduce a demented new change of plans, and Gleeson plays the part with a certain ambiguous sliminess that ensures he avoids caricature while still delivering the unsettling presence most expect from a shadowy government agent.

Gleeson may not be the first actor to spring to mind for a role like this, but he nevertheless stands toe-to-toe with Cruise every time they share the screen, and his American accent's not half bad either.
