Anne Hathaway: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Andy Sachs - The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Hathaway was already fairly well known by 2006, thanks to The Princess Diaries and its lesser appreciated sequel, but it was The Devil Wears Prada that really pushed her towards Hollywood's mainstream, appearing alongside Academy Award Queen Meryl Streep. And while it was Streep who picked up most of the accolades for the film (with a lot of affection for Emily Blunt's caustic comic relied) - including the requisite Oscar nomination - Hathaway's own contribution cannot be overlooked. She offered balance and the relatable filter that the audience needed to watch the grotesque behaviour of the wilder characters with wide-eyed fascination. The joy of the film comes in Streep's monstrous ice-queen interactions with Hathaway's Andy, particularly when she reacts to her occasionally hapless new assistant's attempts to please her. It isn't easy to get noticed when Streep's on the screen, such is the way she tends to dominate, but Hathaway manages to pull it off, and displays some comedic chops along the way.
