Annihilation Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The Totally Insane Third Act

Annihilation Natalie Portman

No spoilers here, but Annihilation's third act is an absolute all-timer in terms of ambitious sci-fi spectacle, a visually outlandish, unsettling and beautiful sequence that's nothing if not a brave attempt to tell a totally unique spin on typical alien invasion narratives.

This is clearly the section of the film that Paramount was most concerned about before Netflix snapped up the international rights, and indeed, it's easy to see how more causal audiences might be left more dumbfounded than entertained or satisfied by what happens.

If you're prepared not to get all the answers you crave and go down the rabbit-hole with Garland, though, this is a visionary finale like nothing else out there right now.
