2019's Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark - an adaptation of Alvin Schwartz's horror anthology novel series - was a firm box office hit, grossing an impressive $105 million worldwide on a budget of just $28 million.

In April 2020, a sequel was officially announced, with director André Øvredal set to return and stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Natalie Ganzhorn, and Dean Norris expected to reprise their roles.

By 2023 Øvredal revealed that the story had been completed and the script was being worked on, but after a few years of little movement, we got a most disappointing recent update.

Back in May, while promoting his new movie Passenger, Øvredal said that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was trapped in "copyright ownership hell," because the two main companies that produced the film - CBS Films and EOne - effectively no longer exist.

The filmmaker added that there was "currently some movement" with the legal red tape, but considering we're already seven years removed from the original, it does rather feel like the moment has passed.
