10. The Mexican

The Island Ewan McGregor Scarlett Johansson

The Mexican was released in 2001 and was directed by Gore Verbinski (Rango, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring), starring Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts as a couple in a precarious situation caused by a rare gun and a series of violent and often funny confrontations.

Pitt stars as Jerry Welbach, a guy forced to run a number of illegal errands for a jailed crime boss. His latest errand, which will also be his last, sees Jerry going to Mexico to retrieve the Mexican, an ancient and expensive gun. Along the way, Jerry is confronted by various hitmen and criminals after the gun and must find a way to save his girlfriend, Samantha (Roberts), from another contract killer called Leroy (James Gandolfini).

The Mexican has no real genre, which is part of its charm. It's at once a comedy, an action-thriller, a crime-drama and a romance, and it easily balances them all. Pitt and Roberts are stellar as a squabbling couple, and Gandolfini shines as a sweet but secretive killer. The cast is finished up with Gene Hackman, Bob Balaban and J.K. Simmons, and thanks to awesome action scenes and fantastic one-liners, The Mexican is a film that's perfect for the days when you don't know what to watch.
