We Own the Night is a 2007 crime drama directed by James Gray (Ad Astra) which showcases a thrilling cast led by Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Wahlberg and the legendary Robert Duvall. It's a dark and twisting family drama with sub-plots about corruption, honour and innocence that all all manage to hit the right notes.

The film follows Bobby Green (Phoenix), a nightclub owner who frequently entertains Russian gangsters. When his brother, police Captain Joseph Grusinsky (Wahlberg), performs a raid on the club in hopes of taking down Bobby's clientele, he finds himself targeted by vengeful criminals. Despite the rift in the sibling's relationship, Bobby must step up to help take down the bad guys.

We Own the Night is a thrilling journey into the complications of a challenging family dynamic and a tense action which rarely stops to take a breath. Phoenix and Wahlberg are both brilliant as rival brothers, and Duvall stands out above the rest of the cast as the family patriarch and the chief of police.

A bleak portrait of crime and violence, the ending is brilliantly achieved and the tension keeps the film from becoming just another predictable flop.
