Another 20 Underrated Movies You Have To See

14. Gothika

There are dozens of horror films in existence which could quite easily fill their own list, but for this entry Mathieu Kassovitz's 2003 mystery horror Gothika deserves a shout-out.

After a terrifying encounter with a ghostly figure, psychiatrist Miranda Grey (Halle Berry) wakes to find herself as a mental patient in the very institution she works. She has been accused of murdering her own husband (Charles S. Dutton), but has no memory of the crime in question. As she tries to uncover the secrets surrounding her husband's death, Miranda becomes terrorised by a vengeful spirit and a series of bizarre hallucinations.

Gothika is a expertly crafted horror with enough jump scares and shocking imagery to keep you awake a few nights, but outside of the classic horror tropes is a riveting mystery bolstered by solid performances from Berry, Dutton, Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey Jr, and effective direction from Kassovitz.

Telling you to prepare for the worst though wouldn't quite do justice to the grim twists the film offers. It's one hell of a ride and a seriously under-appreciated horror flick.
