Before he hit all the right notes with last year's biopic of Judy Garland, director Rupert Goold brought audiences this under-seen drama starring Jonah Hill, James Franco, Felicity Jones and Ethan Suplee.

Based on (you guessed it) a true story, the film follows a disgraced New York Times journalist called Michael Finkel (Hill) as he comes face-to-face with a suspected murderer (Franco), who has stolen his identity and is awaiting trial for the murders of his wife and three children. Although what follows is a mystery which morphs into a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse between the two men, True Story maintains a tight focus on their real-life interactions and the deep tension between them.

Jonah Hill and James Franco have made careers out of being funny-men turned dramatic Oscar-nominees, and this film perfectly showcases the range of their acting chops. Jones also shines as the wife of Finkel, and the direction of Goold is expertly achieved.

It's a slow-burn which causes you to constantly ask questions about the characters involved: Is Christian Longo guilty? Why did he take Finkel's name? What else is he hiding? The answers will only shock and cause you to hold your breath, but it's completely worth every second of your time.

Aidan Whatman hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
