Apostle Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs
4. The Fantastic Supporting Cast
Apostle benefits massively from a strong supporting cast, led by Michael Sheen, who plays cult leader Prophet Malcolm.
Though at first it seems like Sheen's playing a pretty familiar, garden variety cultist, ultimately Malcolm proves a far more complex and interesting character than that, as Sheen lends him nuance and ensures he's far from a cartoon antagonist.
Mark Lewis Jones also deserves considerable praise for his terrifying performance as Quinn, a high-ranking member of the cult whose methods for weeding out dissent are far more callous and violent than Malcolm's.
Jones gets some incredibly tough, unpleasant material to work with, and he does a terrifically vile job making the audience thoroughly loathe him.
