Apostle Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. It's Shockingly, Unflinchingly Violent

Though it takes a while to get there, when this movie goes violent, it goes really violent. There are a number of extremely queasy sequences in the latter half of Apostle which may leave even anointed gore-hounds watching through splayed fingers, and rightly so.

Evans doesn't hold back from showing the grim extent to which the cult goes to protect its interests, nor the inevitable explosion of violence that occurs during the movie's final showdown.

While the intensity level is again dialled back significantly from The Raid movies, the literal slow-bleed at times results in a more prolonged feeling of unease that enhances the movie's mood and tone wonderfully.
