Apostle Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

3. It's Got Some Killer Twists & Turns

No spoilers here, but Apostle isn't quite the movie you might think it is. Many have compared the film stylistically and narratively to the cult classic thriller The Wicker Man, though that only really holds true on the surface, and it quickly becomes clear that this is something entirely different.

The second half of the film in particular serves up some surprisingly subversive twists on cult movie cliches, veering off in a few directions you probably won't see coming, all the way to its oddball final scene.

Sure, the spine of the story isn't terribly surprising, but within that framework, Evans manages to create a singular, wholly unique and imaginative thriller all the same.
