Aquaman: 10 Reasons To Be Excited

6. The Tone

Aquaman Movie
Warner Bros.

Ever since the more serious Man Of Steel and Batman v. Superman released, the DCU has been attempting to strike an effective balance between light-hearted and serious in each film's tone. Suicide Squad and Justice League weren't quite able to hit the mark, but Wonder Woman pulled it off, and that's likely why the film ended up being so successful. When films pull off these effective balances, they are not only extremely accessible but offer both enjoyment and striking emotions over the course of their runtimes.

So far, it appears that Aquaman has hit WW's balance in tone. Humor is present but doesn't actively devalue a character or moment. Comedy in these films is used so often as a crutch in comic book movies; a joke during a big moment because the movie is too afraid to take itself a little seriously.

Aquaman looks to be using it to help define specific characters, like Arthur, who will develop as the film goes on, eventually settling more into his regal role. This is a story about identity, power, and finding your place in the world. Humor will (and should) be present, and they seem to service the film, rather than hijack it.
