Aquaman: 22 Easter Eggs & References Explained

6. Kaiju

Pacific Rim Kaiju
Warner Bros.

When Arthur finally locates the Trident of Atlan, he's forced to contend with Karathen, the colossal leviathan guarding the trident.

As if it's not surreal enough that Karathen is voiced by Julie Andrews of all people - apparently foregoing a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns yet lending her voice to this - the creature's design was reportedly inspired by the Kaiju monsters immortalised in Japanese creature features (and more recently Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim).

Considering that Karathen is an imprisoned, starved beast dwelling at the bottom of the ocean away from the surface world, her similarities to Pacific Rim's kaiju in particular are actually pretty remarkable.
