Aquaman: 23 WTF Moments

4. Nobody Believes In Atlantis

Aquaman suffers from a similar problem to Ghostbusters 2. In that sequel, everyone in New York City seems to have forgotten that the Ghostbusters literally saved the world from destruction when Gozer was planning on raining destruction on them and that there was literally a giant Stay Puft Man rampaging through the city as well as countless ghost sightings as Armageddon approached. We know this because everyone seems to have stopped believing in ghosts and the 'Busters are treated with scorn.

That's called selective memory in the service of narrative tension and it pops up again in Aquaman.

At one point, we're shown a Fox News-alike news panel in which the guests debate the existence of Atlantis. It seems to be normal public opinion that the place doesn't exist, even with Aquaman sightings reported. Because there's just no way an underwater city could possibly exist in a world where Superman exists, where an army of alien demons tried to take over the world lead by a demi-God villain or where meta-humans are an open secret.

What the hell makes Atlantis such a difficult thing to accept when there are literally Gods fighting monsters around the place?
