Aquaman Final Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 5 Downs
Downs...
5. The Totally Generic Plotting
Some might argue that it makes good marketing sense for the trailers to focus on the broadest, most generic elements of Aquaman's narrative, but there's the sneaking suspicion that there probably isn't much more to the story than we're seeing here.
From the sentimental glimpses of Arthur Curry's (Jason Momoa) childhood with his parents, to the typical "chosen one" cliches, the training montages with Nuidis Vulko (Willem Dafoe), the evil villain (Patrick Wilson's Ocean Master) seeking out a precious trinket to rule the land and all the hand-wringing about impending war, it just seems insanely textbook.
Yes, it's unlikely Warner Bros. would've given James Wan $160 million otherwise, but it's hard to be excited about what seems like a thoroughly down-the-line, predictable story.
It'd be great to be wrong, but it's not like Wonder Woman was much to write home about in the plot department either (well executed though it was).
