Avengers 4: 15 Big Questions From Everything We Know So Far
9. Why Does Hawkeye Become Ronin (And What Happens In Tokyo)?
What We Know
Thanks initially to set leaks and then official images of Hawkeye, we know that Clint Barton is in for a bit of a make-over for Avengers 4. This follows the revelation that he's under house arrest during Infinity War after choosing to hand himself in and take a deal to be with his family.
Also, there was at least one sequence of the sequel set in Tokyo (where casting calls asked for Japanese gangsters, hinting at the involvement of the Yakuza) and that noth Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye and Scarlet Johansson's Black Widow filmed those scenes.
What We Need To Know
Firstly, how he's no longer under house arrest. Are the Accords (and thus their fallout) completely done now? Has the government forgiven him and Scott Lang and freed them? Or is it something more sinister that could feed into why he's now Ronin.
Could it be that his family were killed by Thanos when he snapped and that turned Barton darker and more edgy? It'd certainly fit his evolution into Ronin in the comics. And it would explain why he's back on active duty when he'd retired.
And then there's the Tokyo question. If the film is indeed set later, could we be looking at an Avengers mission to clean up the Yakuza? Or might there be more to it tying to other villains - as in the rumour that the Yakuza are actually Skrulls in disguise and the mission is being led by Captain Marvel... Either way, it's an interesting mystery.
