4. The Reshoots Will "Finish The Movie"

The Avengers 4 reshoots are obviously going to be important, but if Mark Ruffalo is to be believed, they might be even more critical than we realise.

While appearing on The Marvelists podcast, Ruffalo dropped a few interesting tidbits about the nature of Avengers 4's currently-underway reshoots, mentioning that the film hasn't even been completed yet:

“Well we’re doing reshoots starting in September. And then we’ll go back into the international tour, we’ll go on tour… then you guys will get [Avengers 4]. Which we don’t even know what it’s gonna be yet. We’re not just doing reshoots, we’re going to finish the movie, which we really didn’t get to finish totally when we left it last year.”

This will come as a surprise to most of us, since it was assumed that Avengers 4 was already in the can and the reshoots were purely going to be pickups/tightening the story up.

But Ruffalo makes it sound like they only shot maybe 80/90 percent of the movie last year, and the rest will be done now.

He also spoke about the process of the reshoots themselves, stating that the Russo Brothers are being very flexible and allowing for multiple takes of each scene:

“Some of [the decision-making about plot] is happening while we’re there. It’s pretty amazing. And we’ll shoot some stuff and a few days later come back and reshoot it cause we wanna take it in another direction. It’s a very living organism, even as we approach it being a locked picture, we’re still working on it.”

It's great to hear that the filmmakers are taking the time to ensure they get each moment right, even if that means cycling through numerous different ways of approaching a scene. With the movie still months away, they definitely have the time to do so.
