4. Angel: Buffy The Vampire Slayer

One of the few deaths that led to a resurrection, Angel's death as the end of season two of the show was an emotional tour-de-force. As Angelus, he had already proven himself to be Buffy's most dangerous foe yet, murdering Jenny Calendar, torturing Giles, almost killing her friends after leading them into a trap and then freeing the demon Acathla to suck the world into Hell. As far as break ups go, Buffy and Angel's was actually apocalyptic. But at the eleventh hour, everything changed. Willow conjured the spell to restore Angel's soul and the epic swordfight between vampire and slayer came to a dramatic halt as her boyfriend returned before her very eyes. Unfortunately it was too late; Angel had freed Acathla and the world was already on the brink of destruction. Worse still, Angel remembered nothing of his actions since losing his soul. In a truly gut-wrenching moment, Buffy asked Angel to close his eyes, gave him one final kiss and then ran a sword through his chest, sucking him into Hell instead of the Earth. Accompanied by Christopher Beck's emotive score, the conclusion to Buffy The Vampire Slayer season two changed things forever. Angel was dead and Buffy had left town, expelled from school and home.
