5. Tara Maclay: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Joss Whedon is an evil man; look no further than the death of Tara in season six of Buffy The Vampire Slayer for proof of that. In Willow and Tara, Whedon created one of the most groundbreaking, heart warming, believable gay relationships on television. It was decvestating enough when Willow's dependency on magic caused them to split in season six. Fortunately there was hope as Tara and Willow reunited and Amber Benson finally got her name in the title credits after two years. Then Whedon had series villain Warren shoot her and kill her. The title sequence entry had been one massive piece of wool over the audiences' eyes. Warren's attempt to shoot Buffy - who also died in the episode for a third time before Willow resurrected her - resulted in a stray bullet catching Tara in the chest. She died in Willow's arms, causing the loveable witch and best friend of the slayer to embrace her dark side and almost destroy the world. Tara's death was brutal, devastating and launched the Dark Willow arc that ended season six in dramatic fashion. Fortunately the same couldn't be done with Willow's next love interest Kennedy...
