Avengers: Age Of Ultron - 10 Stupid Blunders That Completely Ruin It

7. The Tone Is All Over The Place

At multiple points in AoU you'll go from action set-piece to a forced one-liner that takes you out the moment, back to the action and into a sentimental scene where the score tells you what to feel - only for a cut to black and a completely different scenario to jump in and make you realise that's all you're getting for the previous one. Case in point being the closing act and the final battle with Ultron himself. Following a completely random "Just another day on the job"-style exchange between Hawkeye and Black Widow as they drive nonchalantly through the city amidst destruction, the next scene is Quicksilver's unnecessary death, only for Hulk to go after Ultron off-screen (complete with him 'hilariously' saying "Oh for god sake!") and then back into the operatic death score for Mr. Maximoff. This sort of thing happens multiple times too, with the scene in Hawkeye's house being another one. We go from Black Widow's memories as a girl being trained to see certain people as targets, through to Thor treading on a child's Lego set, to him then leaving and Cap suddenly remembering how much he misses Peggy again. The score seems forever intent on reminding you what to feel as each clunky emotional gear chugs into place, but when the whole thing moves at a pace that also wants to keep you engaged at the height of each tone's potential, it only makes each part completely ineffectual.
