Avengers: Age Of Ultron - 11 Implications For Captain America: Civil War

4. The Return Of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

The nature of S.H.I.E.L.D. has of course been shaken up tremendously ever since it tuned out that Hydra had infiltrated the organisation in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, causing Cap, Black Widow, Sharon Carter and Maria Hill to leave it, while Nick Fury handed over the title of Director to Agent Coulson. In the show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson has since tried to build a new, better S.H.I.E.L.D., while Robert Gonzales has attempted to build his own version of the outfit which was decidedly less trustful of superheroes, and opposed the Coulson faction. The developments from the TV show have yet to properly bleed into the MCU yet, though there were definitely some hints in Age of Ultron. Nick Fury shows up during the final battle in the Helicarrier along with Maria Hill, Rhodey and some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to help evacuate Sokovia, and at the end aids operation of the new New York Avengers base with Hill, Dr. Helen Cho and Erik Selvig. With Cap's Avengers team in the same facility, it kinda feels like old times again, and though it probably won't happen for a while yet if ever, it would actually be a pretty natural way for Agent Coulson to be brought back into the fold in Infinity War. If Fury and Coulson have a working relationship and can share resources, then things feel pretty much back to the status quo of the original Avengers movie, with the superheroes working under the new S.H.I.E.L.D.
