20. Off With His Head!

Before release, there were some pretty spot-on rumours out there, including a good deal of actual leaks that were immediately dismissed as being too silly (see also "Fat Thor"). In amongst that pile was the apparent revelation that Thanos was going to die very early on - or at least one version of him was - which surely couldn't be the case, because it would cause a vacuum where he'd been so important to Infinity War.

And yet, that's exactly what did happen, with a gnarled Thanos revealed to be picking prickly pears ("if you prick a raw paw, then next time beware") to make himself some soup (along - weirdly - with some romantic candles for himself) while he recovers.

It then turns out that he's destroyed the Stones to avoid his own temptation and when he grandstands and expresses no remorse, Thor simply lops his head off with a finality that is both exhilarating, shocking and heart-breaking (when you realise it initially ruins their chance). Seeing him die so quickly totally knocked the wind out.
