Then

Aside for his debilitating injuries during the events of Civil War, War Machine has been a constant since he first appeared in Iron Man. He got his hands on the armour and since then has been Tony Stark's dependable second. Even when he briefly became an official Avenger at the end of Age Of Ultron, his more important role was as back-up to Stark.

It was only during the Wakandan battle that Rhodes struck out on his own - admittedly with Falcon - but he still very much felt like a cog in the machine.

Now

Mentally, Rhodey is going to be a wholly different man to what we've seen before. He has seen his closest allies and friends - Tony and Falcon (after their Infinity War bromance) - lost and he will be forced to step up once more as a "true" Avenger. It seems he's going to be getting an aesthetic upgrade, with the same white Quantum Realm suit the other survivors wear at some point, which came out thanks to a LEGO mini-figure.

And interestingly, according to some more information gleaned from tie-in toy leaks, Rhodey is going to be coming to the fight with some serious upgrades. Two LEGO sets seem to suggest that he will have a new vehicle and he might also get the Destroyer super-weapon that debuted in the Marvel v Capcom video game series.

It'll be interesting to see how much his new sense of individualism emerges in the wake of the Decimation, that's for certain.
