Avengers: Endgame - Mysteries Answered

3. Thanos' Retirement Plan

Thanos' final moments at the end of Infinity War saw him retire to a picturesque planet and hang up his boots (or, I guess, gauntlet) content in the knowledge that he had won. This scene raised plenty of questions though: Where exactly was he? How had the snap damaged him? Are the Infinity Stones still around? What will he do next?

Endgame answers all of these questions pretty much straight away and, in the movie's first big surprise, sees the Avengers' instant rematch with the Mad Titan on his new planet. It's clear the snap weakened the villain massively, and the heroes easily overpower him, but not before he reveals a final devastating piece of information: he destroyed the Infinity Stones, content in the knowledge he'd achieved everything he needed to, ensuring there was no way to reverse his vision.

In anger, Thor beheads him on the spot, ending the Thanos of Infinity War's story barely twenty minutes into the film. He of course shows up again in a fashion, as the main villain of the piece is actually the Mad Titan of 2014, who travels through time still in the pursuit of the Infinity Gauntlet.
