Avengers: Every Single Deleted Scene From Endgame & Infinity War
32. Thor And Rocket Vs. The Midgard Serpent
Recently-released concept art in the book Avengers: Endgame – The Art of the Movie has confirmed that, at one point in time, Thor and Rocket were supposed to come face-to-face with a giant serpent-like creature - which fans understandably believe to be the MCU's iteration of the mythological Midgard Serpent (or should that be serpents).
Considering the fact that said concept art shows Thor wielding Stormbreaker (not-to-mention that Rocket is by his side), it seems that this was the God of Thunder's original test to claim his new weapon.
“This was going to be the introduction of Stormbreaker. It was forged way back when, and one of Thor’s ancestors had wielded it to destroy the World Serpent… We wanted to create something that was interesting and different but still feel like you could tell that it’s buried in something. There was also an idea of how after they got Stormbreaker, as they were escaping, the children of the World Serpents would attack them, and they would have to fight their way out.”
The final cut of the film instead had him go to Nidavellir to forge the axe, and while it was ultimately a great method of getting him back in the game, the notion of Thor taking on giant snakes for his weapon just sounds too good to be true. Unfortunately, it was.
