5. The Heart Of The Universe

Commissioner Gordon explained escalation best in Batman Begins. What happens when you start wearing body armor? They start using armor piercing rounds. We carry semi-automatics, they start using automatics. An alien with a magic glove that warps reality shows up, so we go out and use a machine that turns us into the Gods of every reality. Classic stuff. While that sounds a lot like a deus ex machina ending to the big fight with Thanos, it is something that could happen. While officially it is not a part of Marvel's complicated and ever changing continuity, the Heart of the Universe was an item hidden in the depths of space that allowed its user to become one with literally everything as long as they were strong enough to handle absorbing its full power. In the comics it was Thanos who managed to gain the Heart's full power, and in doing so called down the wrath of the Living Tribunal and the Abstracts (we'll get to them in a second). To the Living Tribunal's surprise, Thanos was above even him in power at this point, and during their fight the Titan absorbed him along with the entire Marvel Multiverse. That route is pretty unlikely, seeing as the movies would just play out like episodes of Dragon Ball Z with everyone one upping each other with some new power every time things are starting to look bad, but there is another way the Heart of the Universe could come into play. In the comics, the species that has the Heart before Thanos weren't strong enough to absorb its full power, so they merely leech power off of it. Say the Guardians of the Galaxy get a hold of some of this power before Infinity Wars, and we have a setup to where they could at least have someone like Drax stand up to Thanos.
