Iron Man's final big surprise is, of course, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) opting to out himself as Iron Man, dispensing with the notion of secret superhero identities in the MCU, as was a major breath of fresh air for fans and filmmakers at the time.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, the idea came from high up at Marvel, with Kevin Feige clinging to the idea that they needed to ditch the age-old tradition of superheroes concealing their names and faces:

James Gunn: "When he says, 'I am Iron Man', that was letting go of the idea of secret identities."

Jon Favreau: "It's so hard to keep it feeling real. A lot of that was Kevin to be honest with you. We came up and he was like 'Yes, we should.' He latched onto that."

Of all the many shewd decisions Feige has made over the years, this surely has to be one of the best and most crucial.
