Why?

Dropped to the bottom of a sizeable stone structure as a sacrifice to secure the Soul Stone, Gamora gets splatted after Thanos has to "sacrifice something he loves".

In terms of how the scene is put together and the sheer importance of it to Thanos' development (who we know is back in Avengers 4 with post-credits, "Thanos will return") all evidence points to a future Guardians movie without its leading lady. On the flipside though, Gamora and Star-Lord both declare their love for one another in a nicely touching scene, giving some meaningful character development for both of them, and that would be a shame to go to waste.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is already confirmed too, despite many members of the crew also getting vaporised. Assumedly, something down the line will resurrect them all in one go, but as for the how? We'll have to wait and see.
