Infinity War tells a far simpler story, simple enough that it allows the film to effectively become a Thanos (Josh Brolin) character study for the most part, culminating of course in his devastating victory.

By comparison, Endgame is extremely complex, weaving a logic-stretching time travel plot which naturally climaxes with the heroes mounting their all-encompassing last stand against the Mad Titan.

Both movies upended expectations in satisfying ways, with one making the most of its grim potential, while the other launched off to become a crowd-pleasing showcase for incredible fan service.

WINNER: Infinity War definitely had an easier job, but it also feels more successful overall. Endgame raises the scope and stakes, but is also a bit bloated in parts, and the internal logic of the time travel is frustratingly wishy-washy.

That's not to deny how satisfying Endgame was overall, but Infinity War's more streamlined and focused story ultimately felt more water-tight.
