Avengers: Infinity War - What Does The Ending Really Mean?
4. Thanos Will Return
The title for Avengers 4 has been withheld because of its spoilery nature with regards to Infinity War, so there was a chance they'd use the end of this movie as an opportunity to unveil the title of the next one, since it's customary for these movies to have 'The Avengers will return' at the end anyway.
They don't go down that route, and understandably so as it'd be immediately revealed anyway, but do tease the future with a simple card reading:
"Thanos will return."
It's not exactly unexpected, since Josh Brolin was previously confirmed for Avengers 4, but it's interesting nonetheless for a couple of reasons. One is that Thanos' story, in terms of his goals at least, is wrapped-up at the end. The other is that it makes it even more explicit that this movie is Thanos 1 even more than it is Avengers 3, and suggests next year's offering will be Thanos 2 as much as it is Avengers 4.
That makes sense as the Avengers need to try and undo his wiping out of the universe, but it could also play into the idea of him having some big regrets over his actions.
