2. Captain Marvel

Fate: Responded to a page (so presumably still alive)

When it was revealed that Captain Marvel was being set in the 1990s, it was assumed that something in that movie will be revealed to explain where she's been for the past 20 plus years. Surely she's unavailable if Nick Fury didn't call her in to deal with the Chitauri invasion or Ultron, right?

Well, no. It seems she's always just been at the end of a pager message and she's now on her way to Earth to help clean up Thanos' mess. That's bad news for the Mad Titan as she's the most powerful character the MCU has ever seen and she'll be key to making him pay.

And of course, before that, we'll get to see how she got her powers and how she and Fury got on pager friend terms.

1. Thanos

Fate: Survived & Escaped

Most theories about Avengers 4 deal with how the surviving heroes are going to undo what Thanos did, so it would seem likely that the Mad Titan is going to have to come out of retirement to protect his act of mercy when he learns what's happening.

There's a possibility that we'll see some regret from him - hence the scene with young Gamora on the Soul World (or so it seemed to be) at the end of Infinity War. But he's a creature of principle and he knows what he did was right for the universe by his own logic.

He will be defeated, but it's going to take a lot and you have to suspect that the damage to the Gauntlet might well be key in the sequel. Whatever the case, seeing more of Infinity War's best character is not a bad thing.
