WHY He Died

Falcon's death probably served two purposes. The first - in dramatic terms - was probably a means to alienate and isolate Captain America a little more. As the Russos have said since release, the Secret Avengers had grown closer together because of their missions together and Falcon's death would have hardened both Black Widow and Cap even further. So it served that purpose.

And there's been some talk of the Russos wanting to keep the core involved in Avengers 4 to the original Avengers, which means no spot for Falcon, who didn't debut until The Winter Soldier and was very much a second generation Avenger.
