WHY He Died

Again, Groot's death was precisely targeted at causing maximum dramatic impact to another character - in this case, Rocket Raccoon.

After Groot's first sacrifice, Rocket had been forced into an almost paternal position with Groot where he'd been the one being protected in their original dynamic. This was a huge deal for Rocket, even if he ignored it outwardly initially, and there's a reason he was dran to Yondu in Vol 2. They're both fathers through circumstance.

Watching Rocket have to witness the death of what amounts to his son was incredibly hard to take, and you can see in his reaction the reason for the Russos choosing to target Groot.
