Bad Education Review: 5 Ups & 1 Down
4. Allison Janney's Brilliantly Sardonic Pamela
While Hugh Jackman's performance alone could've powered the film, Allison Janney also provided a strong, much more intense performance as Jackman's second-in-command, Pamela Gluckin. Whereas Frank is much more the charming, pleasant type that lives a bit more modestly, Pamela is bold and lives lavishly.
Janney may be known best for her bitterly-sarcastic and hilarious roles, but Bad Education reminds everyone she's capable of much more. The way that she jumps from satisfyingly-smug to shocked to devastated to angry gave off big 'Toni Collette in Hereditary' vibes and it was such a treat to watch. Much like how the movie introduces Frank, you get a terrific sense of Pamela immediately and Janney seems to be having a fun time playing the part.
The only unfortunate aspect is that once things start picking up and the embezzlement is discovered, Janney mostly disappears from the movie. It's understandable from a story aspect (much of the film's first act is focused on her) as the film needs more Frank time, but it's a shame audiences couldn't see more of Janney in this role.
