BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs
6. Mahershala Ali Beats Richard E. Grant For Best Supporting Actor
There's no doubting the impressiveness of Mahershala Ali's performance in Green Book - thoroughly mediocre though the film itself is - but it's a damn shame that BAFTA didn't give the gold statue to Richard E. Grant for his sublime performance in Can You Ever Forgive Me?
This was Grant's first ever BAFTA nomination and it really seemed like this would be an apt case of BAFTA "rewarding their own", even if it also would've been a thoroughly deserved victory in its own right.
Instead Ali continues to barrel towards Oscar night with enormous momentum, while Grant remains a bridesmaid for the only role in his career for which he's received significant awards attention. Shame.
