BAFTAs 2020: 10 Ups & 5 Downs
7. Bait Wins Outstanding British Debut
The Outstanding British Debut award went to writer-director-editor-cinematographer Mark Jenkin for his universally acclaimed new film Bait, which triumphed over stiff competition - namely the hit documentary For Sama - to scoop the award.
It was an especially stirring victory for the film because as Jenkin himself pointed out, the drama about the tensions unfolding in a Cornish fishing village was shot on hand-cranked film, the film was hand-processed, and the sound was all post-synced.
It's an experimental film the likes of which rarely gets recognised by glossy awards shows, and yet, it managed to triumph on (almost) the biggest stage there is. Fantastic.
