BAFTAs 2020: 10 Ups & 5 Downs

3. Micheal Ward Wins The Rising Star Award

The BAFTA Rising Star Award is the only BAFTA voted for by the general public, and as a result some of the winners in previous years have been rather suspect - namely Noel Clarke and Adam Deacon.

BAFTA also has a frustrating tendency to nominate actors who are already established entities in their own right, and so their inevitable victory by virtue of sheer popularity does them no favours at all.

But this year the general public got things right, giving the win to Top Boy and Blue Story star Michael Ward rather than his far higher-profile rivals such as Awkwafina and Jack Lowden in particular.

The 22-year-old Ward seemed genuinely grateful for the recognition, as did his mother Keisha, who openly sobbed as she watched her son accept the award. How could you not love that?
