BAFTAs 2021: 8 Ups & 7 Downs
1. A (Mostly) Predictable Oscars Awaits
The BAFTA results confirmed that this year's Oscar ceremony is bound to be an incredibly predictable and totally unsurprising one.
The major categories are largely sewn up at this point, with Nomadland sure to win Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, and even in categories where BAFTA deviated from the trend - such as giving Anthony Hopkins Best Actor over Chadwick Boseman - it's unlikely to move the needle with the wider Oscar base.
At this point the only race that continues to thrill and interest is Best Actress, which has seen a different actress win each of the four main televised awards so far - Viola Davis won the SAG, Andra Day scooped the Golden Globe, Carey Mulligan took home the Critic's Choice Award, and now Frances McDormand has snagged the BAFTA.
Further complicating matters is the fact that BAFTA only nominated two of the Best Actress Oscar nominees - McDormand and Vanessa Kirby - meaning we can't really infer much at all from McDormand's win here.
Basically, Best Actress is the only field that truly feels like everything is left to play for and a highly probable winner isn't totally mapped out. Beyond that, expect a largely foregone night of winners when the show finally takes place on April 25th.
But these issues aside, here's everything BAFTA got right this year...
